What is Mpox?

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the Mpox virus. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever. Most people fully recover, but some get very sick.

Anyone can get Mpox. It spreads through close contact with someone who is already infected. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Mpox has spread across the entire U.S., including more than 30 cases in Nebraska.

You can learn more about Mpox, including symptoms of Mpox infection, on the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Service website. Click the button below to visit the DHHS Mpox education page (opens in a new window).

More about the MPox vaccine

To be fully vaccinated and have the best protection against Mpox, people need to get both doses of the Mpox vaccine. The second dose is given 4 weeks after the first dose. If it has been more than 4 weeks since the first dose, the second dose can be administered as soon as possible, and the series does not need to be restarted.

If you have received your second dose, there is no need for a third dose at this time.

Get Tested

It is important for all sexually active people to be regularly screened for common STIs, even if they are not experiencing symptoms. The CDC recommends testing at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well as regular testing for HIV. Those who have multiple or anonymous partners should get tested every 3 to 6 months.

People's Family Health Services can help you access affordable STI screening in our area, or you can contact your regular healthcare provider to schedule a test. Learn more about affordable STI testing on the People's Family Health Services website. Click the button below to visit the People's Family Health resource page (opens in a new window).
